May 28, 2017  – new information

On 5-16-17, by a vote of 10-1 with only Johnny Khamis voting no, the San Jose City Council voted to “decline” the proposed new ordinance on mobilehome park closures. 

This has a direct bearing on the horrible Opt In, the run around rent control being pushed by Brandenberg,  Staedler and Moore, who are the largest mobilehome park management companies in San Jose.  Using the fear of park closures, which ironically  they say they do not intend to do, they have said in effect give us more money, give us some form of vacancy decontrol, give us the ability to pass monthly capital improvement costs onto you without a hearing before a hearing officer, give up the many rights you have under the current “petition for a fair return” process,  and we will stay open.  Smells like coercion at best and blackmail at worse to me

But now we are stronger.  The 10-1 May vote has made us stronger.  Here is why (taken from an article in my newsletter which will go out in June):

“By a vote of 10-1, with only Councilperson Johnny Khamis opposed, the City Council declined to enact a new city ordinance that would have weakened  the protections residents have if a park owner decides to close a park or convert it to another use.  A big thanks to Mayor Sam Liccardo who wrote a last minute memo and led the charge to “decline” the new closure ordinance.  Park owners will now have to follow the already existing Conversion Ordinance which gives us more protection.

Another big thanks to the group of mobilehome residents from several parks who got together to  create and present a power point comparison of conversion versus closure and urged the Council to support the Liccardo memo.  In order in which this group spoke, we thank:

    So – we can now stand even stronger against Opt In.  Keep signatures coming.

The purpose of this site is to educate mobilehome residents about the Opt In proposal being pushed by some of the mobilehome park owners in San Jose.  Our second purpose is to inform you of how, when and where you can help in defeating this proposal.  The site will continue to have information added so check back.
